Ibbotson had intended to be a physiologist, but was put off by the amount of animal testing that she would have to do. It just isn’t believable.


The scaffolding of every adult book by Eva Ibbotson is the same: Though most of these books have appeared in paperback from Avon and do pop up at used-book stores, they first came out in hard cover and should be available through interlibrary loans xwans most libraries. I don’t know; I’m thinking it was probably a combination. That goal is in the same spirit as this site; here is how Ibbotson explained it in Contemporary Authors:.

Harriet, the heroine, could as easily be talking as Rom, the hero, except Harriet is inevitably doubting herself, while Rom is inevitably expounding on how perfect Harriet is.

The love story is wonderful, and I like that while it’s certainly a main part of the book, Harriet’s dancing – A sweet, fun, charming read. After various machinations she manages to reach the troupe in London and sail with them to Brazil.

Turns out, her stupidity goes even farther. Which is a pity, because Rom is gorgeous.

Mar 24, Angie rated it really liked it Shelves: I mean, it’s not gratuitous or anything, it’s simply that Ibbotson completely changes the character and then the character loves the fact that she’s being immoral.

Ibbotson was widowed with three sons and a daughter. Not exactly the Amazon, but tropical nonetheless. So not only is it a terrible anachronism, but I prefer not to be beat over the head with the sexual attractiveness of my hero, thank you.

I lost any interest I had in and for Rom too. Ballet plays a very important role in this book, it’s what allows Harriet to finally escape from her overbearing parents. She refuses to wait and dream of a future and drives her lover away by making him think she has another love aka And yet, I had some serous qualms with certain plot points swwns some of the decisions of the characters.
